A classic margarita made from scratch with silver tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, and simple syrup — no sour mix. Ready in 5 minutes and strong enough to skip the second round.
Optionally, salt or sugar the rims of your glasses by rubbing a lime wedge along the rim of the glass. Roll the wet edge in a small plate of salt or sugar.
Juice the lime and measure the juice.
Combine tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake until chilled, about 30 seconds. If not sweet enough, add more syrup to taste.
Strain into the salt- or sugar-rimmed glasses filled with crushed ice.
Notes
Use mid-range white tequila in this recipe. Gold tequila will add unwanted flavors to your margarita. You can substitute any triple sec for the Cointreau; however, your margarita may end up a little sweeter. You can also substitute orange juice; add extra syrup to taste. Use only fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice has preservatives that give an off taste. You can substitute agave or sugar. Replace simple syrup with an equal amount of agave. To substitute sugar, use half the amount of simple syrup, around 2.5 teaspoons; stir it into the lime juice and give it a few minutes to dissolve.
