Alex loves sports, including football. Luckily for Alex, he’s converted me into a passive football fan. I watch it (within reason) when it’s on, and sometimes cheer. I can have the game on in the background while I do other things. I enjoy the Super Bowl for other reasons - namely food and commercials. Alex has simply taught me to follow the game.

For our first annual Super Bowl party, I pulled out the stadium cake pan (affiliate link) that I use exactly twice a year (once for our college football party and once for the Super Bowl). Last year, when I made it for the first time, I used the recipe that came with the pan. It is pound cake made with cream instead of milk. This makes it heaven to lick the spoon after you pour the batter into the pan.
I wasn't entirely sure what I was doing when I decorated it last fall. I wanted the cake to be Super Bowl-worthy, so I did a little research ahead of time. Someone suggested using tinted coconut as the turf - this was incredibly easy to do. I toasted the rest of it to cover the outside part of the platter. I wasn't sure what to do about fans, but luckily the Colts and the Saints had white and black as part of their colors. I used frosting to paste pearl nonpareils on half of the stands, and shoved mini chocolate chips on the other half. M&Ms made good enough football players, and a lone brown one shoved in the coconut made a great football, I think.
I really enjoy making this cake, even if it takes a little while to decorate. I wish I had had the time to add a little more color to it. I'll have to come up with something a little different to put on it next time!
